Ficus elastica 'Tineke Ruby' has stunning ruby red/pink variegated oval leaves which develop inside a sheath which will grow larger as the new leaf develops. The mature leaf will unfurl, dropping the sheath off the plant.
It's commonly known as the Rubber Plant and is an extremely low maintenance plant that can grow 1m x 1m.
It will thrive in a spot with bright, indirect light although it can also handle a little bit of direct morning sun.
Like almost all other indoor plants, the Rubber Plant will hate being too close to a heater or catching the draught of an air con. Keep them well clear or risk the dreaded leaf drop.
Keep soil on the dry side. Drench soil thoroughly, then allow it to become moderately dry before watering again. Water regularly from spring to autumn. Sparingly in winter. Over watering and stem rot are common problems, especially at low temperatures.
Repot in spring - remember to only go up one pot size. If you choose too big a pot, then the excess potting mix retains moisture and can lead to fungal problems and root rot. Use a high quality potting mix with excellent drainage.
After potting, pat the potting mix down to remove any air pockets and water in well using a weak seaweed solution. This will help it settle in quickly and happily.
Pictured here in a 13cm pot, this is the plant size you will receive. It will be shipped potted.
